Artist Statement

Although I’ve painted in many places around the world, the central Alberta landscape is at the core of my artistic being and I experience it acutely with all my senses. It’s my ongoing mission to respond to its splendours and mysteries with every creative means available. I find universal expressions of beauty and wonder in specific details observed especially while painting en plein air.

I decided to interpret the visual impact of my outdoor experiences onto much larger canvases. I wanted to feel more of the epic sensation of sublime awe I get while on location.

I have also been exploring a means of expression by using birch panels and following the lines of wood grain as my guide to creating imagined representations of forms, beings, and environment. At this stage of my life I am seeking a more profound appreciation of nature presenting a juxtaposition of infinity alongside mortality.

I use a lot of colour and a lot of paint. I solve problems by drawing and I relish the process of creating art. I have an affinity for story and drama and usually work somewhere between truth and pure invention. I am a representational painter and yet my figures, portraits, and landscapes are full of abstractions in form, line, mass, texture, and colour. I prefer to work from life both for figures and landscapes but ultimately everything I paint comes from deep inside my head.

Over the course of my career I have practiced several artistic disciplines including painting, filmmaking, acting & directing for stage and screen, performing & composing music, and teaching. Each discipline informs my choices, decisions, and explorations of the other disciplines. I enjoy painting excursions with my long time friend Dave More, and we have a favourite expression, “Let’s see where this goes.”
